Oceanography is a relatively new subject. Therefore, it falls short when it comes to community driven resources. It always baffled me that it’s possible to search the internet with just an error code and find a solution to a computer programming issue. It’s not just computer science. You can find resources in forms of blogs, forums, videos for physics, chemistry, mathematics etc. – largely made by independent creators with a passion for the topic. When it comes to oceanography though, most of the time I found my classmates and myself sifting through research articles and outdated websites targeted at other disciplines like geography and geophysics.
There is no reason the barrier of entry should be so high. I believe some of us have a gift of presenting and a passion for teaching. Our goal with this website is to get these people together and give them a platform. Alongside original content, the website will also feature other sources of great content. The website is non-profit and we will not add any invasive advertising. We’re not super concerned about revenue right now – our initial plan is to fund the site ourselves.
We were inspired by mainly by science communicators and youtube channels. Channels like SciShow, Veritasium, Tom Scott, LEMMiNO, Kurzgesagt have made science fun and relatable for me personally over the years. I hope we can do the same for some people.
