Oceanography is a relatively new subject. Therefore, it falls short when it comes to community driven resources. It’s possible to search the internet with just a software error code or an obscure physics question and get answers easily. It has always baffled us that we need to dig into research articles to find answers to basic oceanography questions. There are virtually unlimited resources in forms of blogs, forums, videos for physics, chemistry, mathematics etc. – largely made by passionate independent creators. Oceanography students have to deal with second hand information targeted at other disciplines e.g. geophysics, geography etc.
There is no reason the barrier of entry should be so high. We believe some of us have a gift of presenting and a passion for teaching. Our goal with this website is to get these people together and give them a platform. Alongside original content, we hope to feature other sources of great oceanography content on the website. The website is non-profit and we will not add any invasive advertising. We’re not super concerned about revenue right now – our initial plan is to fund the site ourselves.
We were inspired by mainly by science communicators and youtube channels. Channels like SciShow, Veritasium, Tom Scott, LEMMiNO, Kurzgesagt have made science fun and relatable for us over the years. We hope we can do the same for some people.
